All Too Late

His skin under her broken fingernails
Means so much.
His bleeding fist from the window out of which she was thrown
Shows so much.
These words are nothing--
her death proves everything.
His slurred words which hurt her more than his threatening stance
Said so much.
And her unwavering hand raised in defiance
Expressed so much.
Staring at her closed eyelids,
he felt empty.
His eyes fell on his child, who had been taught to love her daddy
if it killed her...
he did.
But her decided to get help---no one left to hurt---
The shrink said his problem could be fixed
with a drug.
And he sat and stared at nothing.
